The activity of
CIRPeM is carried out in four directions: census, acquisition, information-gathering
and indexing, research. Census is concentrated on
the Italian music periodicals and the most prominent of those of musical
interest from the end of the eighteenth century to the current day. Acquisition
has enabled the constitution of a specialised library – in paper
originals or microfilm – the only one of its kind in Italy. Information-gathering
and indexing consists of the pursuit of the activity begun in the middle
of the 1980s by RIPM, and now conducted autonomously: currently, such
activity is carried out by a team of seven collaborators. Research
projects are focusing on the
musical life of the 19th-20th centuries. The activity,
previously on music periodicals in the 19th century, extends now to the
periodicals of the 20th century, and comprises not only the publications of
wholly musico-theatrical topics but also those that, although not
specialised, hold nevertheless a particular interest for the same sector
(daily newspapers, magazines and cultural journals). Since 2001, CIRPeM is directed by prof. Marco Capra. Research projects
‘The reception of Italian Opera and Giuseppe
Verdi in 19th and 20th century’ The project is supported by Ministero per i Beni e le Attività
Culturali, CIRPeM and Istituzione Casa della Musica. ‘Music periodicals in Italy in
the first half of the 20th century: census, information-gathering,
analysis’ The project is part of the main
project “Data Bank of Music Criticism, 1900-1950” focusing
on the Music Criticism in Italy in the first half of the twentieth century,
supported by Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della
Ricerca, and realized by the Universities of Firenze (coordinator), Cagliari,
Napoli, and Parma. The project “Music periodicals in Italy in the
first half of the twentieth century: census, information-gathering, analysis” avails itself of
the fundamental contribution brought by three institutions based in Parma:
University of Parma, CIRPeM and the Istituzione Casa della Musica. Given the current state of researches, it is considered that the project should
begin from the census and the classification of publications relating to
music appearing in Italy in the first half of the 1900s. It will then proceed
to the gathering of information from certain periodicals particularly
significant for their role in the cultural context of the era. To this end,
the research will occupy itself both with periodicals of strictly musical
topic, and those which are nevertheless notable for the room afforded to news
reportage and music criticism (daily newspapers, magazines and cultural
journals). In detail, the distribution of the
activity will follow the programme below: - the Università di Parma will direct
the programme of research: it will oversee the activity of
information-gathering and culling of selected periodicals; it will supervise
the co-ordination of the activity of the institutions involved; it will
guarantee the sharing of the results obtained amongst all the participating
universities and other bodies involved in the research, and will ensure the
wider international dissemination of the studies and research. - CIRPeM will undertake the census and
the classification of the periodicals of musical interest emerging in Italy
in the first half of the twentieth century; it will place at disposal the
periodicals useful to the research that are within its library or will
acquire them ‘ex-novo’; it will begin the process of
information-gathering. The census, in particular, for every periodical will
have to verify the following information: 1) title and subtitle; frequency,
place and duration of publication; founder and/or proprietor, printer and/or
publisher, principal collaborators; 2) availability of the periodical: city,
place of conservation, quantity of issues. - the Istituzione Casa della Musica
will furnish the information support for the management and the dissemination
of the results obtained from the Parma ‘Unità di ricerca’, as
well as the organisation of a conference of study on topics appropriate to
the research, with the consequent publication of the conference proceedings. |
